The Happiness Project: Day 1

Yesterday while browsing through Pinterest, I found the 30 Days of Happiness poster. Each day is something to do. Today, on my day off of Spring Break 2017 I started day 1: go outside. I went through a phase where I always had to nap each day. I lacked energy so I napped all the time thinking I was tired. SO, I sat down today and created a happiness journal to coincide with this project.

I got asked why I post personal mental health stories on social media, and my answer is this is a social societal issue that I want to help others with by not feeling alone. I thought that this project was a perfect example of a healthy coping activity.

Today, I ate lunch and was watching Grey’s Anatomy when I felt like I wanted to take a nap, I decided to go for a walk. It was quite cold out so I decided to take a different path while listening to Reba Mcentire’s  new gospel album. When I go outside sometimes it can be hard to focus on your surroundings. You may be thinking about what you have to do within the hour, or wanting to scroll through social media, but instead today practiced mindfulness. I learned mindfulness in DBT and basically it is using all of your senses. What do you smell? What do you hear? What do you see? What can you touch? What can you taste? It’s like a form of meditating. I was able to get my butt of the couch and take in the day. The smell of fresh air even if it was cold out. The sun was shining, and we are not guaranteed tomorrow, so why not enjoy the present moment?

I encourage you to embrace the sunshine. For whatever reason you are reading this, make today worth waking up for and skip the nap.

xoxo, Anna
